CYCLING DEMONSTRATION TOWN

This funding for Lancaster as a Cycling Demonstration Town has now come to an end.  See p.80 onwards of this document for Lancaster City Council’s summary of the 6-year project.

History

Lancaster and district was one of only six towns to receive extra funding from Cycling England in October 2005 to promote cycling - particularly utility cycling - and demonstrate what can be done to increase levels of cycling.  This meant an extra £0.5 million a year for each year from 2005-2008, which had to be matched by local authority funding.

In 2008, Lancaster was awarded funding for a further 3 years.  The funding is due to run out in 2011, and the question of what happens thereafter is a pressing one for us.

Dynamo was initially enthusiastic about the opportunities offered by the extra funding and - equally important - the status of being a Cycling Demonstration Town.  The euphoria, however, has inevitably been tempered by reality.  Read the Dynamo assessment of the first 2 years.
