Dynamo’s letter to consultants looking at the A6 corridor (21.01.12) Jacobs Engineering of Sale have been engaged by Lancashire County Council to look at the A6 corridor between Galgate and the centre of Lancaster. The southern route in and out of Lancaster is a perennial concern - it is the most obvious route between Lancaster University and the city, yet each time cyclists are directed away from the A6 and onto indirect, hillier routes. We see this as an opportunity to push for a high quality solution. Read Dynamo’s letter to Jacobs Engineering. Dynamo’s proposal for events to mark the passing through of the Olympic flame, June 2012 (21.01.12) Read Dave Horton’s email (below) to local City Councillors ahead of the Cabinet meeting on 17 January 2012. The passing of the Olympic flame through our district at the end of June presents us with an unprecedented opportunity. How wonderful would it be to open up Lancaster city centre to mass participation in Olympic sports – bringing the Olympic spirit to the heart of our district? We – various cycling groups based in the area – propose that Lancaster city centre gyratory become a place where people – young and old, able and not-so-able – can cycle. Cycling the gyratory would provide them with a novel view of our fine city, and could also create a cordon for the inner city centre – where people might try out a range of other Olympic sports (100 metre sprints down Common Garden Street? Long jump in Market Square?). Cycling around the heart of Lancaster would be a fine way to provide all kinds of people with a taste for cycling – highly appropriate, given that the first event of this year’s Olympics is the men’s cycling road race, in which Mark Cavendish - BBC Sports Personality of the Year, Tour de France Green Jersey winner, and reigning World Champion - has an outstanding chance to grab Britain’s first Gold. It would thus be fitting to give the gyratory over to cycling for all, and also to use the opportunity to host a range of cycle racing, from single lap races for the young and less experienced, to multiple lap races for more expert riders. We urge you seriously to consider our proposal – one which we would of course be happy to help make an outstanding success, and which would showcase our district in this Olympic year as a vibrant, active and sustainable place, both to live and to visit. What better way to build on the gains already made over the last six years as a Cycling Demonstration Town, and to cement our District’s growing status as a really special place to cycle? In recent years we have become a prime cycling destination. Let’s take this opportunity to keep that process going! Representatives of the Clubs and organizations who are signatories to this message would be very eager to meet, to help make this happen and be a truly memorable day for all. Thanks very much for your attention. I, and many other local cycling enthusiasts, look forward to your response. Very best wishes Dave Horton |
