Lobby your councillors/attend public meeting for a district-wide default 20mph speed limit  (10.10.09)

There are initial moves to get a default 20mph speed limit introduced across the district.  Dynamo strongly supports this as it would undoubtedly make the roads feel - and even be! - safer for cyclists.  However, it's not only cyclists who would favour it - it would also benefit pedestrians reduce noise pollution, and encourage more walking and cycling amongst everyone.  It is therefore a community-based initiative that would make our district a safer and pleasanter place for everyone.

(For background on this latest initiative, turn to page 120 of the Lancashire Locals agenda of 1 September 2009 at http://committeeadmin.lancaster.gov.uk/Published/C00000636/M00004964/$$ADocPackPublic.pdf.)

There are various ways in which you personally can support this.  First of all, we would urge you to write to your local city and county councillors to ask them to support the proposal (and if you don't know who your councillors are, you can find them at http://www.lancaster.gov.uk/a-to-z/c/councillors).  You can either write your own letter, or use the draft that Dynamo has prepared.  Feel free to pass this on to other people who would also support the limit - whether cyclists or not.  The more people who write to local councillors - and the wider the constituency - the more the message will get through.

Secondly, there is an open public meeting on 20mph city-wide default limits at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21st October at the Storey Institute, Lancaster.

Please do what you can to support this initiative.  More and more towns are introducing 20mph zones, and we should all do what we can to make sure Lancaster and district joins that group.
