CYCLING DEMONSTRATION TOWN |
|
Lancaster and district was one of only six towns to receive extra funding from Cycling England in October 2005 to promote cycling - particularly utility cycling - and demonstrate what can be done to increase levels of cycling. This meant an extra £0.5 million a year for each year from 2005-2008, which had to be matched by local authority funding.
Now, in 2008, Lancaster has been awarded funding for a further 3 years.
Dynamo was initially enthusiastic about the opportunities offered by the extra funding and - equally important - the status of being a Cycling Demonstration Town. The euphoria, however, has been tempered by reality. Read the Dynamo assessment of the first 2 years.
Lancaster City Council have set up an email list for the Cycling Demonstration Town. To join, simply email celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk (please write 'mailing list' in the subject box). You'll receive regular updates on forthcoming events, news and projects. There is also a CDT page on the Council website.
The City Council has established a CDT Steering Group to handle activities, which reports to the CDT Board. Dynamo has a seat on the Steering Group, along with the CTC, Pedal Power, Lancaster University and City and County Council representatives.
